Designing
with uPVC
Unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (uPVC) has properties, which allow
it to be used as a replacement for and often advantage over traditional
material such as cast iron, asbestos cement, clay and wood. Its greatest
benefit is its high modulus (stiffness) per unit cost and it is therefore
most commonly used in load bearing applications such as pressure pipes.
It also has other feature which has great value to the designer, for
example its low density, good chemical and weathering resistance and
self extinguishing immediately the source of ignition is removed, if
it is not removed it continues to combust and soften. The impact strength
of uPVC is very dependent on the formulation used but it can be at least
as high as that of nearly all other thermoplastics. It has an upper
continuous service temperature of 60 oC.These properties are coupled
with an ease of processing which allows the finished product to be produced
easily and economically, particularly by extrusion.
